Beginning Spanish 1 - NCAA Aligned - High School Course
Beginning Spanish I provides an engaging introduction to Spanish language and culture over a 26-week academic year (may be split in 2 segments). This course builds foundational skills in pronunciation, essential grammar, and vocabulary, fostering confidence and fluency for everyday communication through real-world contexts and rich cultural exploration.
Students develop practical communication skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, starting with introductions, greetings, and basic vocabulary. The curriculum progresses to describing people using ser, adjectives, and dates; discussing university life with -ar verbs, numbers up to 100, and time; and exploring courses and locations with tener and ir. Further topics include family descriptions with possessive adjectives and -er/-ir verbs; clothing, weather, and preferences using gustar and numbers beyond 100; domestic spaces with estar and ir + a + infinitive; pastimes and sports with gustar + nouns and e-ie verbs; emotions using ser and estar distinctions; food with e-i verbs and irregular verbs; and community places with present progressive and saber/conocer.
By weaving grammar, vocabulary, and Hispanic cultural insights, the course guides students from basic to more complex communication. Through multimedia practice, guided conversation sessions with native speakers, and carefully scaffolded assessments, learners gain the skills and confidence to engage in everyday conversations and understand authentic Spanish in familiar contexts.
Created by Dr. Crystal Marull, an award-winning University of Florida professor and coordinator of the UF Online Spanish Program, this course is aligned with ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, focusing on interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication.
The course is built on proven teaching methodologies exclusively licensed from the University of Florida, ensuring a high-quality, research-backed learning experience.
For homeschool students, a prefilled NCAA CORE-COURSE WORKSHEET is provided to streamline documentation.
